The utilisation of helium as process gas in laser powder bed fusion limits the generation Ti-6Al-4V hot and incandescent spatters enhances their cooling rate. In present study, operando X-ray diffraction using synchrotron X-rays permits to verify that rates experienced by deposited material are not significantly affected unlike spatters. Topography measurements top printed surface reveal lower roughness He-produced samples, attributed previously observed reduction with He thus a redepositions on surfaces. Operando radiography provides insights spatter formation mechanisms namely particle entrainment, agglomeration, melting spheroidization.HighlightsThe average samples produced is than Ar equivalentDeposited during LPBF use HeGrain size orientation similar when processing under Ar, He, mixture bothOperando identify

Laser powder bed fusion of Ti-6Al-4V parts: Thermal modeling and mechanical implications

A continuum-scale modeling approach is developed and employed with three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA), for simulating the temperature response of a Ti-6Al-4V, two-layered parallelepiped with dimensions of 10×5×0.06 mm during Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), a metals additive manufacturing (AM) method. The model has been validated using experimental melt pool measurements from the l...

Laser Powder Cladding of Ti-6Al-4V α/β Alloy

Laser cladding process was performed on a commercial Ti-6Al-4V (α + β) titanium alloy by means of tungsten carbide-nickel based alloy powder blend. Nd:YAG laser with a 2.2-KW continuous wave was used with coaxial jet nozzle coupled with a standard powder feeding system. Four-track deposition of a blended powder consisting of 60 wt % tungsten carbide (WC) and 40 wt % NiCrBSi was successfully mad...

Gas nitriding and subsequent oxidation of Ti-6Al-4V alloys

Ti-6Al-4V alloys consisting of α-Ti grains and intergranular β-Ti islands were nitrided at 850°C for 1 to 12 h under a nitrogen pressure of 1 Pa. With increasing nitriding time, the Ti-N compound layer became thicker, and the α-Ti diffusion zone containing dissolved nitrogen became wider. In the Ti-N compound layer, the initially formed Ti2N became TiN as the nitriding progressed. The nitride l...

Fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V

Metallic biomaterials have essentially three fields of use; these are the artificial hip joints, screw, plates and nails for internal fixation of fractures, and dental implants. Any of these devices must support high mechanical load and resistance of material against breakage is essential. High mechanical properties are needed for structural efficiency of surgical and dental implants. But their...

DIRECT LASER DEPOSITION OF Ti-6Al-4V FROM ELEMENTAL POWDER BLENDS

A thin-wall structure composed of Ti-6Al-4V has been deposited using direct laser deposition (DLD) from blended Ti, Al, and V elemental powders. The microstructure and composition distribution along the build height direction were intensively investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and Vickers hardness testing. The micr...
